What is Maribowl glass?

An icon of 20th-century Finnish design, the Maribowl is a versatile bowl, candy dish, and ice cream cup.
Its prototype was based on German-made bowls from the first half of the 20th century. Finnish glass manufacturers didn’t just create replicas but refined the shape. By the mid-20th century, the distinctive Maribowl emerged. Finns appreciated their elegance, versatility, and originality.
In the 1950s, one of the country's style trendsetters, Armi Ratia, founder of the design company Marimekko, used these bowls for serving at her garden parties. This made the Maribowl popular throughout Finnish society.
Naturally, Marimekko started producing their own Maribowls and patented the design, which they continue to produce to this day.
Even the new Maribowls, produced by the Iittala art glass factory for Marimekko, are considered collectible.
