What is Modernist glass Lunar Eclipse series by Pentti Sarpaneva
Share
Vases and bowls from the Lunar Eclipse series, which simultaneously serve as art objects, created by renowned Finnish designer and jeweler Pentti Sarpaneva.
The upper parts of these pieces often featured Sarpaneva's signature bronze Pitsi (Finnish for word Lace) decorations, crafted by the Turku Silver Company (Turun Hopea).
Sarpaneva's interior designs were known for their monumental quality. His vases often included elements reminiscent of architectural decorations from that era. This particular vase, for example, evokes the style of modernist buildings from the early 1970s. At the same time, the piece embodies cosmic forms, representing the moon in various phases of its eclipse. It is a profoundly intricate and fascinating work.
This vase is mentioned in the book on 20th-century Scandinavian glass by American researchers L. Pina and L. Vigier, titled Scandinavian Glass 1930-2000: Ice and Fire.
