Overview

Antique bronze horse harness bell from Finland, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century. Bells of this type were traditionally mounted beneath the wooden shaft bow of a horse drawn sleigh or carriage.

This Finnish form is broad and low, with thick walls, a flared rim and a solid rectangular suspension loop. The compact proportions distinguish it from taller ship bells, school bells and household bells.

Finnish Equestrian Tradition

Horse harness bells began to appear in Finland during the early nineteenth century and became a familiar part of winter transport. Their sound warned others of an approaching sleigh on narrow snowy roads, while the bell itself also served as a decorative element of the harness.

The engraved number 6 most likely indicates the size of the bell within a numbered production range.

Casting and Surface

The bell was cast by hand, giving the circular outline a slight natural irregularity. Horizontal rings divide the dark bronze surface and emphasize its sturdy shape.

The clapper remains inside. The metal has developed a deep brown patina with warmer bronze highlights along the raised edges, handle and rim.
