Large wooden bowl and art object by Finnish designer Paavo Asikainen, dating from around the 1970s. Its broad low form is built from many visible layers of laminated wood, creating a dense sequence of fine horizontal lines across the entire surface.
The material gives the bowl much of its character. As the curved body cuts through the laminated layers, the pattern changes continuously, making the construction itself part of the design. The result is visually rich, with the warm natural tones of the wood emphasized by the rounded profile.
Finnish Design
Paavo Asikainen worked with wood as both a functional material and a source of form. This substantial bowl sits comfortably between practical object and decorative piece, with proportions that make it suitable for a table, sideboard or open shelf.
The underside is marked Paavo Asikainen, Made in Finland.
