Kaisla art glass object by Kaj Franck, Nuutajärvi

Kaisla (Finnish for reed) art glass object designed by Kaj Franck in 1952. The design remained in production on Nuutajärvi glassworks for only two years, from 1952 to 1953. It is also known by the name Sipuli, Finnish for onion, referring to its rounded bulb form.

The clear glass contains an intricate internal decoration formed from elongated air bubbles. The narrow bubbles rise through the thick glass and open into a repeated pattern around the body, giving the compact object remarkable depth and changing its appearance as the light moves through it.

Kaisla by Kaj Franck

Kaisla belongs to Kaj Franck's early 1950s experiments with art glass. Its small scale concentrates the optical effect of the glass, the rounded outline and carefully controlled internal decoration.
