Lunaria 3449 glass bowl designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala, Finland. Created in the early 1970s, Lunaria belongs to a group of Wirkkala designs in which the surface of glass becomes almost a landscape of its own.
The clear glass has a strongly textured exterior inspired by ice formations, while the interior remains smooth and glossy.
Lunaria Series
Tapio Wirkkala designed the Lunaria series for Iittala in the early 1970s. The bowls were made from centrifugally cast glass, a technique that allowed the pronounced surface pattern to become an integral part of the form.
Iittala produced Lunaria bowls in three sizes from 1971 to 1992. This example is the 15 cm version, a useful size for serving fruit, sweets or snacks, and compact enough to work as a decorative glass object.
