Elegant glass cake and dessert stand from the Maininki series, designed by Göran Hongell for Karhula glassworks in Finland and produced between 1937 and 1959.
The glass has a delicate sea green tone with a cool aqua cast.
The broad circular plate rests on a low pedestal with a gently curved stem. Concentric rings visible through the glass emphasise the geometry and give the surface a quiet sense of movement. The compact proportions make it especially suitable for cakes, pastries, fruit or small desserts.
Maininki by Göran Hongell
Maininki belongs to Göran Hongell's important early work for Karhula and to the development of Finnish functionalist glass during the 1930s. The series combines practical tableware with unusually clear architectural forms.
An example of this Maininki pedestal plate, model 4469, is preserved in the Karhula glass collection of Kymenlaakso Museum.
