Pair of smoky grey glass vessel designed by Finnish interior architect and designer Harry Moilanen for Nuutajärvi Notsjö in the early 1960s. The form was originally created as a drinking cup, but at 15 cm high it also works naturally as a vase for flowers or branches.
The design is built around a gentle expansion at the centre, followed by a straight neck and a softly flared rim. The restrained geometry and grey glass give it the direct, carefully proportioned character of Finnish modernism.
Harry Moilanen at Nuutajärvi
Moilanen joined Nuutajärvi in 1960 and his work there continued until the end of 1962. His period as a glass designer was brief, leaving a relatively small body of work. The British Museum collection includes glass pieces designed by Moilanen.
Moilanen later continued his career in architecture and education. In 1967 and 1968 he taught architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
