Overview
Pair of vintage clear glass liqueur glasses from the Lady series, model 2144, designed by Oiva Toikka for Nuutajärvi Notsjö. The series was produced from 1967 to 1973 and is a rarer example of Toikka’s early table glass design.
The form is compact and sculptural, with a rounded bowl, a wide foot and a distinctive heavy stem. The stem gives the glasses their character: rounded, almost bead like in the centre, with a strong handmade feel and a playful balance between elegance and weight.
Design and Character
Oiva Toikka is one of Finland’s most influential glass designers of the twentieth century, known for his imaginative approach to form, colour and glass as a living material. In the Lady series, the expression is quieter than in his later art glass, but still recognisably personal.
These small glasses have a pleasing presence in the hand. The clear glass catches light through the thick stem and foot, giving the pieces a crisp, Nordic look. They work well as liqueur glasses, cordial glasses, small aperitif glasses or collectible Finnish design objects.
