Overview
Turned wooden tabletop piece by Finnish designer Paavo Asikainen, made in Finland in the 1970s. The form reads as a stylised standing bird, with a round head, pointed beak, long tapering neck and a broad disc shaped body on a small pedestal foot.
The piece works as both a decorative wooden sculpture and a napkin holder. The body has evenly cut radial slots for folded napkins, turning a practical table object into a small piece of Finnish design.
Design
The silhouette is clean and playful: a tall bird shape rising from a compact base, with the head and beak reduced to simple geometric forms. The round body gives the piece weight, while the long neck adds height and elegance.
The gold painted surface gives it a warm metallic glow, but the wood grain still remains visible in places. The cut slots around the body add rhythm and shadow, almost like feathers or sun rays.
