Large Solaris glass bowl designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala, Finland. Produced from 1975 to 1995.
The bowl is made from clear centrifugally cast glass. Its dense relief runs across the surface in irregular vertical and circular structures, creating patterns that recall ice, flowing water and radiating sunlight.
Solaris by Tapio Wirkkala
Nature was a constant source for Wirkkala, especially ice, water, wood and the changing surfaces of the Finnish landscape. Solaris translates these ideas into a substantial sculptural bowl with a wide opening and strongly textured walls.
The generous size makes it suitable as a serving bowl or as a central decorative object on a dining table, sideboard or low table.
