Thyla wine glass by Tyra Lundgren, Riihimäki

Wine glass from the Thyla series designed by Swedish artist and designer Tyra Lundgren for Riihimäki Glassworks in Finland. The series was produced from the 1920s until the 1950s and belongs to the early period of Scandinavian modern glass design.

The glass has a finely balanced form, with a wide clear bowl, a compact sculpted stem and a broad circular foot. The transition from the bowl into the stem gives the piece much of its character, combining the restrained geometry of Art Deco with the delicacy of hand finished glassware.

Tyra Lundgren and Scandinavian Design

Tyra Lundgren was one of the pioneering female designers in Scandinavian design. Her career included work in both Sweden and Finland, as well as collaborations with renowned glassmakers in Murano.

The Thyla series is also represented in the permanent display of the Turku Museum Centre in Finland, placing the design within the documented history of Finnish decorative glass.
