Small clear cordial glass from the celebrated Ultima Thule series, designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala. The series grew from Wirkkala’s fascination with the forms of ice and the northern Finnish landscape, translated into glass through an unusually complex mould blowing process.
Ultima Thule
Wirkkala worked closely with the glassblowers at the Iittala factory, reportedly spending nearly a thousand hours developing the technique required for the series. The resulting surface evokes melting ice, frozen water and rough natural formations.
Ultima Thule became one of the best known Finnish glass collections of the 20th century and was later selected by Finnair for first class service. The cordial size was intended for liqueurs and other small after dinner drinks.
