Designer: Tamara Aladin

Tamara Aladin (1932–2019) was born in Hamina, Finland, and trained in industrial ceramics in the mid-1950s. Though her diploma was in clay, her talent found its true expression in glass.

Rise at Riihimäki

Joining Riihimäen Lasi in 1959, Aladin spent 17 influential years there, during which more than half of the factory’s vase output carried her design signature. She became known for sculptural blown glass with standout series like the Disk vases (1968–76) and the Coral line from the early 1970s. These pieces departed from the typically minimalist Finnish aesthetic, embracing expressive textures and vibrant palettes suited for export markets.

Signature Style

Aladin favored rich hues: petroleum green, amethyst, cobalt, - often layered or bubbled for depth. Her Taalari bowl, with rhythmic ridges, remains much sought after for its tactile presence.

International Reach & Legacy

Her creations were promoted beyond Finland, especially in Germany, and are today featured in the Finnish Glass Museum and Scandinavian design exhibitions. A 2025 retrospective at the Finnish Glass Biennale reaffirmed her status as one of the factory’s most prolific and visually adventurous designers.
