Overview
This hand-blown trio of crystal wine glasses belongs to the Skagerak series, designed by Swedish glass artist Catharina Åselius-Lidbeck in the early 1980s and produced at the Lindshammar glassworks in Sweden. The series draws directly from the coastal environment of western Scandinavia, using glass as both structure and surface rather than as a neutral carrier of decoration.
The glass combines functional clarity with layered material treatment, where form, colour and painted elements remain distinct but visually integrated.
Glass Technique & Construction
The bowl is mouth-blown in clear glass and subtly thickened toward the lower exterior. During hot working, fine blue glass inclusions are introduced and fused into the outer layer of the bowl. These inclusions are integral to the glass body, forming a dense, organic field that rises from the base without interrupting transparency.
The stem is drawn and shaped by hand from blue glass. While hot, it is stretched and subtly twisted, creating internal linear movement within the stem. This process requires precise control to maintain strength and consistency while allowing decorative variation. The stem flows into a broad, hand-finished foot that provides stability and balance.
Painted Decoration
Around the upper section of the bowl, stylised seagulls are painted by hand in soft white enamel. Each bird is applied individually, resulting in slight variations in form and placement. The imagery appears to float within the clear glass, referencing the maritime setting without becoming illustrative or narrative.

This glass was produced at Lindshammar glassworks, Sweden, and painted by F.W. The underside is marked C. Å-L FW, confirming designer and decorator.
