Overview
Set of three clear glass dessert plates from the iconic Aalto tableware series designed by Aino Aalto. The design is based on concentric, stepped rings that create a calm visual rhythm and clear geometry. The plates work equally well for desserts, starters, or everyday table use.
Design
The plates feature a circular form with evenly spaced horizontal ridges radiating from the center. This structure gives the surface depth and visual movement while remaining restrained and precise. The stepped profile reflects the original Bölgeblick concept, introduced in the 1930s, where form is built through repetition and proportion.
Historical Context
The Aalto tableware series was first introduced in 1932 under the name Bölgeblick (Swedish for Wave glance) at Karhula glassworks. Interestingly, Aino's surname Aalto means Wave in Finnish. In 1936 the series received a Gold Medal at the Milan Triennial. Later production continued at Riihimäki, preserving the original design language while adapting it for post-war manufacturing.
