Small Finnish ceramic vase from Arabia’s ARA art department, designed by Kurt Ekholm. Its compact spherical form, restrained geometry and muted green surface are characteristic of the modernist ceramic work associated with Arabia in the 1930s and 1940s.
The piece is handmade from red clay, visible on the unglazed base, with a soft matt green finish. Kurt Ekholm was an important Scandinavian ceramic designer who worked in both Finland and Sweden and played a significant role in Arabia’s artistic production during the 1930s-1950s.
The raised rim at the opening suggests that the form may also have been designed to accommodate a small lid, allowing it to function as a covered jar. No lid is included, and the piece works naturally as a small vase or decorative ceramic object.
Marked on the base: Arabia Made in Finland ARA.
