Vintage Arabia Karelia coffee cup and saucer from Finland, designed by Anja Jaatinen Winquist during the 1980s. This version uses the classic S model form and carries the deep earthy palette that made Karelia one of the most recognizable Nordic ceramic series of its time.

The composition is simple at first glance: warm gray glaze, dark brown bands and soft transitions between tones. But the closer the piece is viewed, the more complex the surface becomes. The edges darken almost like burned wood or smoked clay, giving the set a grounded and tactile presence.

Karelia was created for everyday use, yet many pieces from the series now feel surprisingly sculptural. The thick rings around the saucer frame the cup almost like a graphic composition from Scandinavian interior design of the late twentieth century.

Design

Anja Jaatinen Winquist developed Karelia as part of Arabia Finland’s move toward calmer and more natural tableware aesthetics. The series reflected changing Nordic interiors where darker woods, textured fabrics and earth toned ceramics became increasingly popular.

The hand painted finish gives each piece slight variation in depth and tone. Light catches differently across the glossy glaze, especially around the darker border where brown shifts toward nearly black.

Even decades later, Karelia still fits naturally into contemporary interiors. The restrained palette works beautifully with linen, oak, stone surfaces and minimalist spaces.
