Heavy art glass candle holder from the Kivi Set series, designed by Pertti Santalahti for Humppila Glassworks in Finland. Produced during the 1980s, the piece combines clear textured glass with deep amber sections that gather light near the base.
Its rounded, irregular outline resembles a small stone formation. The surface is deliberately uneven, with rippled walls, raised edges and dense areas of colour that give the glass a strong sculptural character.
Signed: Pertti Santalahti Humppila Finland.
Designed for Two Candle Sizes
The candle holder can be used with two types of candles. The central opening accommodates a narrow candle, while the broader recess is suitable for a tealight or another small candle.
The amber glass becomes warmer when illuminated, while the clear outer sections scatter the light across the textured surface. It also works well as a small decorative glass object when not in use.
Inspired by Nordic Nature
During the second half of the 20th century, Nordic glass designers often drew on the forms of ice, stone, bark and water. Santalahti translated these natural references into thick glass with rough surfaces and flowing, irregular contours.
The Kivi Set name refers to stone, and this compact design has the weight, colour and uneven silhouette of a polished mineral fragment.
