Handmade vintage wooden wall plaque signed J. Salminen, dating approximately from the 1960s or 1970s. A sculptural bird is carved in light wood and mounted against a warm red brown veneered wooden panel.
The bird has an elongated body, rising wings and a strongly stylised tail. The composition suggests a fantastic bird, perhaps a phoenix or firebird. Its flowing silhouette and simplified carving give the piece a distinctly modernist character.
Carved Wood Composition
The bird is carved separately and attached to the backing with small nails. This construction gives the carving additional depth and creates visible shadows between the figure and the panel.
Details
Artist: J. Salminen Period: circa 1960s to 1970s Material: Carved wood, possibly beech, on veneered wood Colour: Natural light wood and red brown Height: 36.5 cm Marked: J. Salminen Mounting hole at the top
Condition
Very good vintage condition with traces of use consistent with age.
The carved bird is attached with small nails. As a result, the upper part of the right wing sits slightly away from the wooden backing. This appears to be part of the original construction.
