Rare ceramic vessel by Finnish woman artist Elin Juselius, decorated by hand in a restrained palette of deep green, brown and warm beige.
The rounded upper body carries a continuous painted band of stylised leaves, berries and branches. Below it, long green lines form an irregular geometric pattern around the narrower lower section. Broad brown bands frame the decoration at the rim and base. The visible brushwork gives the surface a lively, individual character.
Elin Juselius belonged to the early generation of professional Finnish ceramic artists. She was one of the first female ceramic designers in the Nordics. From 1901 to 1910 she studied under Alfred William Finch, an important figure in the development of modern Finnish ceramics. Her work from the early decades of 1900s reflects the period's interest in simplified natural motifs, craftsmanship and expressive surface decoration.
The piece is marked by hand with the initials EJ on the underside.
Ceramics by Elin Juselius is highly collectible, and her ceramics are held in some of the most prominent collections, such as the Collection Kakkonen.
