Substantial vintage crystal bowl and ashtray made in Poland, weighing an impressive 1.7 kg. Deep cobalt blue overlay crystal is cut back to clear glass.

Cobalt Overlay Crystal
The bowl is made from coloured lead crystal using the overlay technique. The blue outer layer has been extensively hand cut to expose the clear crystal beneath. Large geometric facets, traditional diamond patterns and deeply cut radiating stars cover the sides and base.
The central star viewed from above is particularly striking, with long clear rays extending through the cobalt ground.
Design and Use
Several shaped rests are cut into the thick rim for cigars or cigarettes, identifying the piece as an ashtray. Its broad rounded form also makes it suitable as a decorative crystal bowl.
This type of richly cut coloured crystal was produced by Polish glassworks during the second half of the 20th century. The precise factory is unknown.
