Rare large Elämänpuu, or Tree of Life, candle holder designed by Kaija Aarikka for Aarikka in Finland during the 1960s.
The ancient Tree of Life theme is interpreted here through the clear geometry of Finnish modernism. A tall central stem rises from a broad circular base, four branches support large rounded wooden forms. Smaller suspended wooden spheres add movement and rhythm to the composition. The natural pine grain remains an important part of the design, giving every element its own pattern.
Elämänpuu by Kaija Aarikka
Kaija Aarikka developed a distinctive visual language from simple turned wooden forms, especially spheres, ovals and cylinders. In Elämänpuu these familiar Aarikka elements are arranged into an architectural structure. The result works equally well as a candle holder or as a decorative wooden object.
