Overview
Striking vintage art ceramic vase by Glit, Iceland, made by hand in the 1960s or 1970s. The piece has the raw, volcanic character often associated with Icelandic studio pottery of this period, with a strong sculptural surface and earthy glaze tones.
Design
The tall form has a narrow foot, rounded body and dark glossy rim. Around the body runs a deeply textured lava style decoration, built up in rough relief and finished with dark metallic brown accents. Small flashes of red appear inside the raised details, giving the surface a sense of heat under cooled stone.
The ribbed body adds rhythm behind the rough applied decoration. The contrast between smooth glaze, horizontal lines and rugged lava texture makes the vase visually active from every side.
