Pair of vintage GN 46 wine glasses designed by Gunnel Nyman for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.
The form is light, clear and quietly unusual. Each glass has a wide rounded bowl, a short circular foot and a sculptural stem that seems to rise directly out of the glass body. The stem has a softly pinched handmade shape, created during the glassblowing process. This gives the glasses their distinctive character and makes each piece slightly individual.
The design belongs to the elegant postwar period of Finnish glass, when clear glass, proportion and hand formed detail were often enough to create a complete object.
Designer and History
Gunnel Nyman was one of the most important Finnish glass designers of the 1940s and 1950s. Her work helped define the modern language of Finnish glass before the better known international boom of Finnish design in the following decade.
She was often described as a designer poet. In her best pieces, form, material and proportion are closely balanced, with the nature of glass remaining central. Nyman was especially interested in transparency, light, fluid shapes and the living quality of glass as a material.
The GN 46 model was in production at Nuutajärvi Notsjö from 1949 to 1969.

The stem appears to have been shaped by hand during production, with three soft pinched sections that create an organic, slightly asymmetric rhythm. This detail is one of the most interesting features of the design. It gives the glass a handmade presence without making the form decorative or heavy.
