Object
A striking hand-carved wooden crane sculpture from the 1950s or 1960s. Tall, narrow, and reduced almost to a single flowing line, the figure captures the quiet elegance often seen in Nordic modernist interiors of the period.
The body twists gently upward before ending in a sharp beak like point. From different angles the silhouette changes completely. One side feels almost geometric, while the other becomes softer and more organic. The proportions are unusually restrained, giving the sculpture a calm but very deliberate presence.
The wood appears to be a light hardwood, possibly birch or another Nordic species, though the exact material remains unconfirmed. Over decades the surface has developed a warm honey tone with visible grain and natural aging.
There are faint handwritten inscriptions along the edges of the base, including “Porkkalan yhteiskoulu” and “Häkkinen.”
