Overview

Clear glass bowl from the Soodakupla (Finnish for Soda Bubble) series by Kaj Franck, produced by Iittala between 1948 and 1954. The form is compact and precise, with embedded soda bubbles creating depth across the curved walls.

Design & Technique

Crafted using the soda bubble technique, where fine air bubbles are suspended within molten glass during shaping. The bubbles form a dense, evenly distributed field that becomes visible through the thick, transparent glass, especially under direct light.

Historical Context

Kaj Franck developed the Soodakupla works during his early experimental period at Iittala. His soda bubble glass was presented internationally, including the Design in Scandinavia exhibition in the USA and Canada, and at the Milan Triennale, where this technique received critical recognition.
