Kaj Franck – Tupa Beer Mug 5211, Iittala, 1948–1954
Kaj Franck – Tupa Beer Mug 5211, Iittala, 1948–1954
Description
This beer mug is part of the Tupa series designed by Kaj Franck for Iittala, introduced in 1948. Standing 11.5 cm tall with a 0.4 l capacity, the mug is made of deep olive-green glass and features a robust, practical form with a rounded body and strong handle.
The Tupa series was the only utility glass line in the Iittala catalogue of 1949, comprising plates, tumblers, mugs and a carafe. Compared to these more common pieces, larger beer mugs like this example are significantly rarer.
The series is notable as one of Franck’s earliest designs for Iittala, before his long association with Arabia and Nuutajärvi. It remains a collectible example of postwar Finnish modernism, balancing everyday function with clarity of design.
Condition
Very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks; some signs of age and use consistent with the period.

Why buy Kaj Franck’s pieces?
He was a revolutionary in Art glass and tableware design.
In the early 1950s, Franck refused lush decorating of the items in favor of clean lines, shapes, interesting colors and textures, thus, becoming one of the founders of mid-20th century modernist design in the Nordics.
