Magic Night, Finnish Raanu Wall Tapestry, 1960s
Magic Night, Finnish Raanu Wall Tapestry, 1960s
Vintage handcrafted Finnish raanu titled “Taikayö” (“Magic Night”), woven in the 1960s. Made of natural wool and preserved in excellent vintage condition. Height 110 cm, width 63 cm. Cleaned.
Design and Colours
The tapestry presents a striking combination of turquoise, violet, deep brown, green, and small white accents. The composition creates a rhythm of horizontal bands that shift between calm sections and vivid contrasts - an interpretation that feels almost psychedelic compared to more traditional raanu palettes.
Historical and Cultural Context
Raanu tapestries have long been part of Finnish textile tradition, originally used as layered textiles for insulation during winter and later adopted as decorative wall pieces. Each region of Finland developed its own sense of colour and pattern.
By the mid-20th century, raanu weaving blended older weaving practices with a growing interest in modern colour combinations. This piece reflects that transitional period: traditional horizontal striping remains, yet the colours suggest a more experimental, post-war aesthetic.
