Modernist vase in Mediterranean color, Michael Harris era, Mdina Malta, 70s
Modernist vase in Mediterranean color, Michael Harris era, Mdina Malta, 70s
A substantial handmade vase in the colors of the Mediterranean Sea.
This is no coincidence. In 1968, one of the most renowned English glass designers, Michael Harris, established the first art glass production in the ancient Maltese town of Mdina. The designers at Mdina drew inspiration from the colors of Maltese nature.
Partially these vases were made from old bottle glass, which was abundant in Malta. Therefore, this is, among other things, an incredible story of recycling from over 40 years ago.
Made using a sophisticated technique of multicolored glass layers in the form of stripes. The inner layer, with tiny yellow specks, is reminiscent of Murano techniques that imitate gold dust in glass.
Mdina glassworks, 1970s. Height 11,5 cm, Diameter 13 cm. Excellent vintage condition
