Monica Backström Boda Blue Art Glass Egg, Sweden
Monica Backström Boda Blue Art Glass Egg, Sweden
Overview
This sculptural glass egg was designed by Monica Backström as part of her sustained exploration of closed, organic forms in Swedish studio glass. The object is conceived as a self-contained volume, where surface treatment, internal structure, and color distribution define its presence. The form is calm and resolved, inviting close viewing rather than visual dominance.
Color & Surface
The glass is composed around a cool, pale blue base with a finely textured internal structure. Darker blue and teal inclusions are embedded throughout the body, irregular in both size and shape. These elements appear suspended at different depths within the glass, creating a layered visual field that shifts subtly with changes in light and angle.
The surface has a softly mottled character rather than a uniform finish, giving the object a mineral, water-worn quality. The restrained palette avoids sharp contrast, relying instead on density and variation within a narrow range of tones.
Form & Glass Technique
The egg form is evenly balanced, with a gentle taper toward the top and a precisely ground flat base. The piece is hand-blown and shaped to maintain consistent wall thickness while allowing inclusions to remain clearly legible within the glass mass. This requires careful control during hot working, as the inclusions must integrate into the body without disrupting structural stability or optical clarity.
As with all hand-formed examples from this series, the internal pattern is unique to the individual piece.
Designer Context
Monica Backström is a central figure in Swedish art glass of the late 20th century, widely associated with Kosta Boda. Her work is represented in major museum collections in Sweden and internationally.
