Paavo Asikainen Wooden Bird, Finland 1970s (27 cm)
Paavo Asikainen Wooden Bird, Finland 1970s (27 cm)
Turned wood tabletop piece by Finnish designer Paavo Asikainen. The form reads as a standing bird: a round head with pointed beak on a long, tapering neck, set above a disc-shaped body and pedestal foot. The disc has evenly cut radial slots designed to hold folded napkins upright, so the figure works both as a sculpture and a napkin holder.
The surface is finished in matte black with deep red shading that shows along the neck, body and base - subtle gradation that highlights the contours of the turning.
