Overview
Pair of vintage hand-carved wooden wall candleholders in a Swedish-Finnish folk style. The shape follows the long vertical outline of a traditional Nordic distaff, with a narrow lower stem, softly baroque curves and a small candle cup projecting from the front.
The decoration is especially vivid: moss green ground, dark brown edging, ochre yellow flowers, warm red rosettes and lighter leaf green details. The colours give the pair a strong folk character, while the elongated form keeps the look elegant and architectural on the wall.
Form and Decoration
Each candleholder is carved from wood and painted by hand. The front is decorated with raised circular floral motifs, black line accents and small geometric details near the candle cup. The slightly irregular carving and painted surface show the handmade nature of the pieces.
The design belongs to a 20th century revival of older Nordic folk forms, with clear references to 19th century Swedish and Finnish rural interiors. The form appears to be based on a traditional distaff, or possibly made from one.
Use and Interior
These candleholders are made for wall mounting, with hanging fittings on the back. They work well as decorative folk art objects even without candles.
The pair would suit a folk modern interior, a rustic Nordic room, a country house, a cabin, or a collection of Scandinavian wooden objects. Their narrow vertical shape makes them useful beside a mirror, above a small cabinet, or as a pair around a textile or framed artwork.
