About the Brooch
Striking early handmade Aarikka Finland brooch from the 1960s, built around contrast and movement.
A strict square frame surrounds a suspended wooden sphere that moves freely inside the open structure. The geometric metal frame keeps the form sharp and architectural, while the softly coloured wooden bead introduces warmth and motion. The metal appears to be silver, but the brooch is unmarked.
Maker
Aarikka Finland
Period
1960s
Materials
Unmarked silver frame with carved and stained wooden sphere.
The brooch is marked only “AARIKKA FINLAND” without silver hallmarks. This is consistent with some early Aarikka silver jewellery pieces produced during the company’s early years, where only the company name was stamped.
Based on construction, finish, period production and material characteristics, the frame is considered silver.
Dimensions
Side length: 3.3 cm
Condition
Very good vintage condition with light traces of age and use consistent with period jewellery.
Design Details
The suspended wooden bead creates an unusual sense of balance inside the rigid square frame. Aarikka often worked with simple natural forms, but this piece feels especially minimal and modern even today.
The muted green tone of the wood softens the colder metallic surface and gives the brooch a distinctly Nordic character.
The open structure also makes the piece visually light despite the solid silver construction.
Craftsmanship
Handmade in Finland.
Early Aarikka jewellery from this period was produced in relatively small quantities compared with the company’s later mass market production. Pieces combining silver and wood in such a reduced geometric form are considerably less common today.
Collectors Notes
Early Aarikka silver jewellery has become increasingly difficult to find, especially pieces retaining their original moving elements and clean geometric structure.
This brooch works equally well as wearable jewellery or as part of a Scandinavian modern design collection focused on Finnish silver and studio craft from the 1960s.
