Rare Glass Mug, Crown Marked, Karhula 1930s
A rare and heavy vintage beer mug produced by Karhula Glassworks, Finland, circa 1920-1930s. This model is listed in the Karhula–Iittala 1922 catalog as form number 4622 K.
Made of thick pressed glass with a slightly yellowish tint, possibly semicrystal. The mug features a paneled, faceted style body combined with a robust solid handle, giving it both strength and a distinctive early 20th-century Nordic aesthetic.
-
Height: 13.5 cm
-
Capacity: 3 dl (deciliters)
-
Weight: approx. 0.7 kg
Markings:
-
Embossed “3 dl.” capacity mark.
-
Below it, an official stamp with a crown, “1935” and number 44. This indicates maybe the mug was officially verified (most likely for tavern or cafe service) in 1935, shortly after Finland repealed Prohibition in 1932. At that time, alcohol sales were tightly regulated, and such markings may guarante accurate serving measures in licensed establishments.
The combination of the crown hallmark, capacity mark and visible wear strongly suggests that this mug was actively used in a restaurant or cafe environment.
Condition:
Authentic vintage condition with signs of long use: wear, scratches and small chips. These are consistent with nearly 100 years of age and typical for a working beer mug from the 1930s. Overall, solid and collectible.
Collectible Value:
A rare historical piece from Finland’s early post-Prohibition era, uniting design history (Karhula-Iittala glass catalog) and alcohol regulation history (crown verification mark). A fine addition to any collection of antique beer mugs, vintage glassware or Scandinavian design.
