Riihimaki Tamara Aladin, Rengas bowl, 1970s Finland
Vintage heavy blue glass bowl or ashtray designed in the 1970s by Tamara Aladin, a Finnish female designer known for her work at Riihimäen Lasi (Riihimäki Glassworks). It's a quintessential example of Scandinavian modernist glassware, both functional piece and sculptural abstraction.
Thick cobalt-blue glass, which adds substantial visual and physical weight.
Dimensions: Diameter is 13.5 cm, Height is 6.5 cm. Vintage condition: the piece has small traces of use - tiny edge wear consistent with age, please, refer to the photos.
Form: Low and horizontal in proportion, almost architectural in its presence, a hallmark of modernist design’s rejection of the ornamental verticality of earlier styles.
Decoration: The surface features a bold, repeating pattern of concentric rings in relief, creating an almost hypnotic, geometric rhythm. These circular motifs give a sense of depth and complexity, reflecting light in layered ways.
Ideal interiors:
Mid-century modern: As a centerpiece or accent object.
Brutalist or minimalist spaces: Where its bold texture and color contrast beautifully with raw or neutral backdrops.
Eclectic or retro-futurist interiors: As a nostalgic yet timeless sculptural element.
