Set of 5 Thyla glasses designed by Swedish artist Tyra Lundgren and made by Riihimäki Glassworks in Finland. The series was produced from the 1920s to the 1950s and is recognised for its refined bowl, sculpted stem and balanced proportions.
These examples are decorated with hand-painted enamel crayfish in a deep reddish brown tone. The playful motif gives the set a distinctly Nordic summer character and makes the glasses especially suitable for crayfish parties, seafood dinners and festive seasonal tables.
Tyra Lundgren and the Thyla Series
Tyra Lundgren was one of the early Scandinavian women to build an international career in design. She worked in Sweden and Finland and also collaborated with glassmakers in Murano. Her work ranged across glass, ceramics and sculpture.
Thyla glasses are represented in the permanent collection of the Turku Museum Centre in Finland.
