Overview
This large serving bowl belongs to the Skagerak series, designed by Catharina Åselius-Lidbeck in the early 1980s and produced at the Lindshammar glassworks in Sweden. The piece combines functional scale with a distinctly coastal visual language rooted in Scandinavian glass tradition.
Design and Decoration
The bowl is mouth-blown in clear glass with a thickened lower section enriched by blue and white glass inclusions. These suspended dots create a dense, wave like field that gathers toward the base, evoking sea foam and shifting water depth.
Around the upper body, stylized seagulls are hand-painted in soft grey and white enamel. The birds appear to drift across the surface rather than forming a fixed pattern, reinforcing the maritime character without becoming illustrative. Each motif is applied by hand and fired into the glass, resulting in subtle variations that make every example individual.
Glassmaking Technique
The decoration is fully integrated into the glass structure rather than applied superficially. The lower section is worked hot to trap the colored inclusions within the glass mass, while the painted elements are added afterward and permanently fused through firing. The rim is carefully finished, maintaining clarity and balance despite the bowl’s weight.
Designer and Production
Catharina Åselius-Lidbeck is known for her glass designs that merge restrained form with expressive surface work. During this period, she explored coastal themes through material, movement and texture rather than literal imagery.
This bowl was produced at Lindshammar, Sweden, and painted by F.W. The base is marked: C. Å-L FW.
