Handwoven wall rug with traditional northern stripe composition. Subarctic Palette Weave, Finland, 1970s
Material
Wool
Design
A long vertical composition built from horizontal bands of color. Deep red fields anchor the lower half, layered with narrower lines in brown, cream, and muted orange. Above, cooler tones shift into blue and green, with fine rhythmic stripes that bring movement without breaking the calm structure.
The palette feels grounded and northern. There is warmth, but it sits next to cooler hues in a way that keeps the surface balanced. The weave is tight and even, with slight variations that show the hand process. Edges are finished with braided wool cords that act as both detail and structure, while the lower edge ends in a short fringe.
This type of textile was used as a wall piece, both decorative and practical, adding softness to interiors. It works well as a vertical accent, especially against plain walls where the color bands can read clearly from a distance.
