Sven Hofverberg, Stoneware 12 cm vase signed SH, 1960s
Vintage crafted stoneware vase by renowned Swedish midcentury ceramic artist Sven Hofverberg, 1960s. Despite its rather compact size, the vase has a pleasantly heavy, solid feel typical of high-quality stoneware.
Dimensions
Height is 12 cm, Diameter is 11 cm.
Excellent vintage condition. Marked: SH. 158 610V.
The Form
Its rounded, almost spherical body tapers gently into a short, narrow neck with a slightly flared rim, giving it a harmonious, balanced silhouette.
The Glaze
It is particularly striking: a complex, multi-layered surface that shifts from a muted, mossy green to a more olive-brown tone, depending on the light and viewing angle. Around the neck, a dramatic burst of deep red in oxblood glaze creates a vivid, almost organic effect, blending into the softer green background. Subtle gradients and fine speckles in the glaze adds visual depth, showcasing Hofverberg’s mastery of firing and glazing techniques.
Why buy vintage ceramics by Sven Hofverberg?
Unlike many of his contemporaries, who worked within larger manufacturers, Hofverberg chose an independent path, establishing his own studio in Landskrona, Sweden. This allowed him to fully dedicate himself to the pursuit of perfection in stoneware, refining his distinctive approach to form and glaze. His works are now part of the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design collection.
