Overview

Model 2871 vase designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala, Finland. The vase was in production from 1963 to 1968 and belongs to Wirkkala’s refined modernist glass work of the 1960s.

Made in matte white opal glass with a clear and frosted outer layer, it has a quiet architectural presence. The form is tall, narrow and faceted, with vertical ribbing that catches light softly along the sides.

Design

The shape is one of the most interesting details here. The vase is not a simple rectangle: the upper edge has an irregular, almost cut crystal outline, while the body is built from clean vertical planes and narrow ribs.

The white opal interior gives depth and softness, while the outer glass creates a pale misted surface. Depending on the light, the vase shifts from milky white to cool grey and faint silver tones. The base is thick and clear, giving the piece weight and a calm sculptural stance.

Designer

Tapio Wirkkala was one of Finland’s most important designers of the twentieth century. His work for Iittala often explored glass as both material and structure, with forms shaped by nature, ice, geometry and light.

Model 2871 shows the more architectural side of his design language: restrained, vertical, precise, but still organic in the uneven top line and the softened surface.
