Tapio Wirkkala Iittala, Set of 4 Karelia Glasses 1960s Finland
Tapio Wirkkala Iittala, Set of 4 Karelia Glasses 1960s Finland
Elegant vintage set of 4 cocktail glasses designed by renowned Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala glassworks in the 1960s. Part of the Karelia series, these glasses are Wirkkala’s signature balance of organic form and modernist clarity.
Each glass features a sculptural stem with fluid, wave alike detailing, a subtle nod to the natural landscapes of the Finnish East, Karelia region, which inspired the series. The bowl is simple and cylindrical, resting lightly atop the more expressive base, highlighting the contrast between precision and softness.
Height is 7 cm. 7 cl. Excellent vintage condition.
Tapio Wirkkala worked for a long time at the flagship Iittala art glass factory in Finland and also collaborated with Germany’s Rosenthal. He created glass objects, tableware, lamps, jewelry, and more.
He was a multiple winner at the Milan Triennale, awarded the prestigious Pro Finlandia medal, and later became an Academician of the Arts.
Wirkkala’s works are housed in major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Design Museum in Finland, the Glass Museum, and many others. A park in Helsinki is named in his honor.
