Overview

Vintage beer glass from the Tavastia series, designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala. The model has a clear, calm silhouette with a tall cylindrical bowl and a solid sculptural foot. It is a useful drinking glass, but also a strong example of late twentieth century Finnish glass design.

Tavastia takes its name from a historical province of Finland, and the series has the direct, grounded character. The form is not decorative in an obvious way, yet it feels carefully resolved: balanced, stable and comfortable in the hand.

Design

The glass is made in clear glass with a substantial foot and a raised lower section that catches light beautifully. From the side it looks restrained and architectural; from below, the thick glass creates deep optical rings and reflections.

The tall bowl makes it suitable for beer, long drinks or mineral water. The weight sits low, so the glass feels steady on the table and pleasant to hold.
