Object
A striking Minora vase designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala during the 1970s. The surface carries deep vertical textures that bring to mind melting ice, frozen water and weather shaped stone.
The glass changes constantly depending on light and surroundings. In daylight the vase appears cold and crystalline. Against darker interiors it becomes heavier and almost geological in character.
Minora belongs to the important Nordics organic glass tradition that emerged in Finland and Sweden during the second half of the twentieth century. Designers moved away from strict decoration and instead worked with forms and textures connected to Nordic nature itself. Ice, bark, water, cliffs, and winter surfaces became part of the object.
This piece captures that direction exceptionally well. Even standing empty, it functions as sculptural glass artwork.

Scandinavian Organic Glass Design
Minora reflects the Scandinavian organic glass movement that became especially important in Finnish and Swedish design during the mid and late twentieth century. Instead of polished ornament, designers focused on surfaces found in northern landscapes and natural materials.
The textured exterior gives the vase a strong tactile presence. From some angles the glass resembles frozen water, from others carved rock or weathered bark.
Placement and Atmosphere
Beautiful as a standalone sculptural object, but equally effective with a few branches or flowers. Works especially well in minimalist interiors, darker shelves, concrete, wood, and natural fabrics where the textured glass can interact with shifting light.
