Overview

Hand-woven raanu from northern Finland, Lapland. Produced in the 1970s using wool yarn. Long and narrow textile traditionally used as a wall hanging or placed over a bench or chair.

The composition consists of horizontal stripes arranged in measured intervals. Warm orange tones dominate the upper and middle sections. These are balanced by bands of cream, olive green, deep blue and brown. The palette recalls the colors of tundra vegetation and northern lakes.

A fringe of warp threads are at the lower edge.

Design

The textile is structured through a sequence of horizontal color bands of varying width. Broad orange fields alternate with narrower lines in cream, green, brown and dark blue. The darker stripes create visual anchors across the composition.

Subtle vertical accents from the warp appear within some bands, a characteristic feature of raanu weaving. The surface shows the texture of wool threads and the small irregularities typical of hand weaving.

The narrow proportions emphasize the vertical format and allow the stripes to read as a continuous color rhythm.

Cultural Context

Raanu textiles belong to the traditional weaving culture of northern Finland. They were used in homes as functional wool textiles for insulation and decoration. During the 20th century many examples adopted modern stripe compositions and experimental color palettes while maintaining traditional weaving techniques.
