Large art glass vase designed by Heikki Orvola, one of the leading names of modern Finnish glass. Made in Finland in 1974 to 1976, the piece is handcrafted and signed Heikki Orvola Nuutajärvi Notsjö. It also retains its original Arabia Wärtsilä Finland label.
The rounded body is built from thick clear glass filled with dense soda bubbles, surrounding a deep blue interior.
Organic Glass and Natural Forms
Orvola often explored the possibilities of glass through demanding techniques and strongly expressive forms. Here the heavy spherical body, deep colour and trapped bubbles create an impression of material in motion. The surface can recall cooling volcanic lava, mineral formations or air captured inside ice.
The broad clear rim frames the dark blue opening, while the compact rounded shape gives the object considerable visual weight. Its scale and substantial glass construction make it equally suitable as a vase and as a standalone interior art object.
Technique
The vase was created using mould blown glass with soda bubbles and colour cased glass. The controlled bubbles form an integral part of the decoration, giving the thick transparent walls their distinctive depth and changing appearance under different light.
