Germund Paaer: Designer of Iconic Kalevala Pieces

Designer and Goldsmith

Germund Paaer was a trained goldsmith who became chief designer of Kalevala Koru Oy during the mid 20th century. His work helped define what many customers now recognise as classic Kalevala style.

The company had already begun producing jewellery inspired by archaeological discoveries from Finland and Karelia. Under Paaer’s direction, individual pieces gained stronger visual identity and more refined form.

Moon Goddess Pendant

The Moon Goddess pendant is the best known model associated with Paaer. The design is built around a circular form with a stylised female figure placed within the curve of the moon. The composition is compact and symmetrical. The edges are clean, and the relief is clearly defined.

Produced primarily in silver, the pendant has remained in demand for decades. Its size allows it to function both as a statement piece and as everyday jewellery. The model has been issued in slightly varied scales and finishes over the years, but the central motif remains consistent.

Brooches Based on Iron Age Forms

Paaer also developed brooches derived from documented Iron Age clasp types. Instead of copying excavated objects exactly, he clarified the outline and simplified surface elements. Spiral motifs and circular plates were adapted into wearable brooches suitable for modern fabrics.

These brooches often feature precise engraving and controlled relief. The fastening mechanism was engineered for durability and comfort, reflecting his background as a goldsmith.

Silver Necklaces and Pendants

Several pendant models introduced during his leadership became part of Kalevala’s long term range. Many are based on strong geometric structure such as cross forms, discs, and vertically balanced motifs. Silver dominates these designs, chosen for durability and clarity of surface.

Necklaces associated with his period frequently combine repeated elements linked by solid chain sections. The visual rhythm of these pieces creates a structured appearance that aligns with Nordic design preferences of the time.

Rings and Smaller Forms

In addition to pendants and brooches, Paaer contributed ring designs that incorporate engraved bands, raised symbolic signs, and solid silver construction. These rings are typically substantial in weight, with clear edges and defined contours.

Within a Women Owned Company

Kalevala Koru has been owned since its early decades by the Kalevala Women’s Association. Production remains connected to this structure, which links jewellery manufacturing with cultural activity. Paaer’s designs became part of this long standing tradition.

Lasting Presence

Many models created under Germund Paaer continue to circulate in both current collections and the vintage market. Their recognisable forms and consistent construction standards have kept them relevant across generations of collectors and wearers.
