Collection: Designer: Heikki Orvola

Heikki Orvola (b. 1943, Helsinki) trained in ceramics at what is now Aalto University from 1963 to 1968. He began his professional journey in the 1960s and joined Nuutajärvi glassworks in 1968, marking the start of an influential career in Finnish design.

Breakthrough Collections at Iittala

Orvola transitioned to Iittala in 1972 and introduced the Aurora glass set that same year, displaying refined shapes and luminosity. In 1987, he launched Kivi, a series of thick-walled votive holders in deep, jewel alike tones still produced today and known as "stones of light" for their warm candlelit glow.

Expanding Material Horizons

Beyond glass, Orvola designed ceramic and textile pieces. He created the Illusia tableware collection for Arabia and collaborated with Marimekko on fabric designs in the 1980s. His portfolio also includes enamel, cast iron cookware, and tapestry style textiles.

Recognition & Legacy

His work earned him the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1984 and the prestigious Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1998. In 2002, he was officially granted the honorary title of Professor for his design achievements.

Museum Presence & Continuing Impact

Orvola’s pieces, ranging from Candleholders to cookware, are featured in the Finnish Glass Museum and several international collections. A major retrospective showcased over 400 items in 2009, highlighting his mastery of both material and technique. Today, his iconic glassware and home objects remain central to the Nordic design legacy and are cherished by both collectors and everyday users.
